Yalikavak is situated on the North-Western tip of the Bodrum
Peninsula and is 18 km. from the city of Bodrum.
It was first settled in 2000 BC and has ruins from the Hellenistic,
Roman and Byzantine eras. Once a small sponge-divers village,
Yalikavak still supports a thriving fishing industry. It has
been one of the most important fishing centres on the Turkish
Aegean, home to fleets of fishermen and sponge divers.
The overland journey from Bodrum to Yalikavak provides the
visitor with some of the most spectacular scenery on the Peninsula.
Slowly climbing through fertile valleys, the road then tops
at the mountain range running down the peninsula centre before
descending to the seaside village of Yalikavak with its lemon
and tangerine orchards and olive trees. White-washed houses
with cascading bougainvillaea line narrow streets and the occasional
windmill creates a picturesque setting.
Around the harbour, there are restaurants displaying a wide
selection of fresh fish every day. There are shops at the traffic-free
centre, and every week the town hosts one of the biggest fruit,
vegetable and clothing markets on the peninsula.
Western breezes during the hot summer months make this resort
town particularly a popular spot. It has fine beaches, beach
clubs, coves and captivating sunset. Hotels, holiday villages,
fine restaurants abound. Yalikavak continues to expand and prosper.
The Yalikavak Yacht Marina, which has a capacity for 420 yachts
and many shops and restaurants, will have its opening in the
summer of 2004.
Yalikavak is a favourite destination of Turks who live in the
cities. In the months of July and August visiting celebrities
descend on the village, adding a certain air of interest and
sophistication to the area.
The road to Bodrum from Bodrum International Airport (located
40 km from the city) is in excellent condition and International
flights are available throughout the year. There are charter
flights starting March through October from most major European
cities at very reasonable prices
