the early ages, where the locals grow figs and mandarins as
the main livelihood. Every Saturday the town hosts the biggest

Bays, Capes and Islands
Almost one-third of Turgutreis is on the coast-line. There are
several beaches. Most important bays include Kadikalesi, Fener
(Lighthouse), Meteoroloji, Akyarlar, Karaincir, Kargi, Bagla
and Akcabuk. There are regular boat trips around these bays and
the islands. The place which is famous for its figs, Karaincir
(black fig), has the famous 500 m. long beach that is quiet
and very clear. There is a sunken ship near Yassiada, which
is one of the 14 islands of the Sporal Archipelago and underwater
archaeological work is currently being carried out.
Akyarlar
This is the closest point to the Greek island, Kos. Akyarlar
has very rich fish resources and locals used to be mainly engaged
in fishing and sponge diving as a means of living; but this
has changed since tourism became more important in the area.
Lighthouse
There is a lighthouse (Huseyin Burnu Feneri) which was built
in 1931 by the French, in the Kemer district. There is a large
beach by the lighthouse that was covered in berries and black
woods once. There is also the Kemer Cistern, which is still
providing water to the people of Kemer, despite being hundreds
of years old.
Aspat
Just after Karaincir, there is the magnificent Castle of Aspat
on top of a steep mountain. The castle was built by the Genoese
to watch and to use as a refuge. The city of Jerma was built
here during the reign of Moselous. According to one story, there
is a spring in the east part of the mountain that its water
would never lose its taste even if it were kept in a cup for
a whole year. There is a stone building on the shore, which
used to belong to a Cretan man.
Kadi Kalesi
There is a Hellenistic castle on the hill, which also gives
the town its name. The local judge, Kadi, used to live in the
castle during the Ottoman reign and therefore the place was
called 'Kadikalesi' (Kadi's Castle). There is a Roman church
on the opposite side of the hill. The old fountain under the
trees is still used today.
